The mission of the physics department of the School of Science and Technology is to provide Nazarbayev University students with the skills and tools to develop basic technologies and support the knowledge necessary for the technological and industrial infrastructure of Kazakhstan and the larger Central Asian region. A career in physics is exciting because physicists are trained to be natural problem solvers and creative thinkers. The Kazakhstan economy is undergoing a transformation that reflects global trends - know-how and technical innovations are becoming the most important asset. To develop the necessary underlying technologies to support this transformation, highly qualified physicists and engineers are required. If you like the freedom of active discoveries, the power of ingenuity, the language of mathematics and a large salary, then physics is an excellent choice for a career. Our teachers conduct advanced research and publish in internationally recognized journals in the following areas: laser spectroscopy and nonlinear optics (Jean-Jacques Zondi), laser materials science (Zhandos Utegulov), quantum metamaterials (Konstantinos Valagiannopulos), nanophotonics (Alexander Tikhonov), Ultrafast photonics, Tunable Photon Oscillator and Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (Vasilios Kovanis), Solitons and Topological Photonics (Anton Desyatnikov), Quantum Information and Communications (Aykaterini Mandilara), О general theory of relativity, Cosmology, Black holes (Daniele Malafarina), General relativity and quantum cosmology, Quantum field theory (Michael Goode), Atomic and molecular physics, Quantum chemistry (Sergey Bubin), Computational and theoretical astrophysics, Radiation transfer (Ernazar Abdikamalov ), Statistical mechanics and complex systems (Thomas Oikonomou). Directional research opportunities exist, including internships at Nazarbayev University, the National Laboratory of Astana and many foreign universities. Contact the staff of the physics department to find out how to become a physicist and choose your area of research.
